An alternative to rubber safety surfacing, Playground certified wood chips offer many of the same protective characteristics as rubber but at a lower cost. This is a great economical option for playground surfacing. This type of surface is loose fill, meaning there is nothing added to bind the chips together. Two drawbacks of wood chips are that it's not ADA compliant and it will require frequent raking and top-ups.
